Frequently asked questions
How does Knock protect my identity?

Knock doesn't ask for your real name, email, or phone number. When you join a room, you appear to other people as a signal: a self-chosen nickname plus a signal color you pick. That's it.

Other users only see you while you're both in the same room at the same time. When you leave the room, your signal disappears. Nothing about you is shown to anyone outside the room you're currently in.

What is a "Knock"?

A Knock is a short, low-pressure message you send to another person's signal, like a gentle tap on the shoulder. You write a short message to the other person. They can accept or pass silently with no notification either way.

What are the chat modes?

There are three modes you can pick when you join a room. Each one shapes the kind of opener you'll get and the rhythm of any conversation that follows.

  • Playful. Fun small talk. Icebreakers included.
  • Mellow. Gentle check-ins. Openers included.
  • Deep Dive. Real questions. The first one's on us.

You can switch modes at any time from the lobby.

Who is Mystery Bot?

Mystery Bot is a built-in chatbot that lives in the Beta Lounge, a shared room available to everyone in the beta. It's there so you always have somebody to knock on while we're growing the beta tester base.

Most of Mystery Bot's replies are generated on your device by a small rule-based engine. When the rule-based engine cannot produce a good reply, your message and a few recent turns of context are sent through Knock's server to Anthropic's Claude to generate a single reply. No profile information goes with it. Anthropic does not use this data to train their models.

If you'd rather not chat with the bot at all, just don't knock on it. Mystery Bot conversations are stored under the same retention policy as any other chat (up to 30 days, then deleted). You can read more in our Privacy Policy.

Does Knock track my location?

No. Knock reads your location once when you join a room to look up nearby places, and that's it. The location data is sent directly from your device to Google Places. Knock's own servers never receive or store your raw GPS coordinates.

We do not track you in the background, build any movement history, or use your location for advertising. You can read more in our Privacy Policy.

How do I block or report someone?

You can pass on any Knock silently, the other person is never notified. To block a user, tap their signal and select Block. To report inappropriate content or behavior, tap Report on the signal or message. Both actions are available without leaving the app.

You can also email info@knockapp.app with as much detail as you're comfortable sharing. We take safety seriously and will act promptly.

How do I delete my account and data?

Open Safety & Support in the app, tap Account & Privacy, then tap Delete my account and confirm. Deletion is immediate and permanent. Your profile, signals, knocks, chat history, and push tokens are removed from our servers right away. Some safety records (such as reports filed against an account) may be retained in de-identified form for safety, fraud, or abuse review as described in our Privacy Policy.

You can also email info@knockapp.app with your deletion request. Include your user ID if possible (visible in Account & Privacy inside the app). We'll remove everything promptly.

Is Knock available on Android?

Knock is currently iOS-only. Android support is something we're thinking about for the future. Stay tuned.

Something isn't working, what should I do?

Try closing and reopening the app first. If the issue persists, email info@knockapp.app with your device model, iOS version, and a description of what happened. We'll look into it.
